Services

Survey first. Repair what the survey finds.

Treating damp without knowing the cause wastes money. We diagnose before we repair, so the work matches the problem.

Damp surveying

A site visit to find out what is wrong, where the moisture is coming from, and how far it has spread.

  • Moisture readingsTaken across walls, floors and ceilings to map where the damp is.
  • Cause identificationRising damp, penetrating damp or condensation, told apart on site.
  • Building checksGutters, downpipes, pointing, render, roof lines and ventilation.
  • Clear findingsWhat we found, what it means, and what needs doing.

Remedial works

Practical repairs that deal with the cause, then restore the affected walls and finishes.

  • Damp-proof courseNew protection against moisture rising through masonry.
  • ReplasteringRemoving damaged, salt-contaminated plaster and replacing it.
  • WaterproofingProtection for basements, cellars and below-ground walls.
  • Ventilation and condensation controlImproving airflow where moisture is building up indoors.
  • External repairsFixing the defects that let rain into the building.

Damp problems

Three kinds of damp, three different fixes.

They look alike on a wall but have different causes. This is why the survey comes first.

Rising damp

What you see

A tide mark and white salt deposits on lower walls, generally below about 1 m. Peeling paint and crumbling plaster.

Usual cause

Ground moisture drawn up through masonry, often where the damp-proof course has failed or is missing.

Usual remedy

New damp-proof course, then replastering with salt-resistant materials.

Penetrating damp

What you see

Damp patches that grow after rain, on external walls, chimney breasts, or ceilings below the roof.

Usual cause

Water entering through a defect such as blocked gutters, failed pointing, cracked render or roof faults.

Usual remedy

Repair the defect, let the wall dry, then make good the finishes.

Condensation

What you see

Black mould in corners and on ceilings, wet windows, and a musty smell, worse in cold weather.

Usual cause

Warm, humid air meeting cold surfaces, usually with poor ventilation.

Usual remedy

Better ventilation, heating and moisture control, plus mould treatment.

  3. Findings and plan

We explain what is causing the damp and what work, if any, is needed.

  4. Remedial works

We carry out the agreed repairs and leave the area ready for redecoration.
